APA to march again for science

In April of last year, in Washington D.C. and around the world, people gathered to show their unwavering support for science at the first ever March for Science. The American Psychological Association mobilized its membership and staff to march in support of scientific research and the use of scientific evidence in policymaking and for the public good.

The second March for Science is now scheduled for April 14, 2018, and once again APA will join together with scientists and supporters to celebrate a shared passion for scientific discovery and promote the use of scientific evidence to inform policy.

As an official partner of the march, APA is encouraging psychologists, psychology students and their allies to stand up for science and march in Washington or at an affiliated march. This year, APA has arranged to have psychologist and gun violence researcher Susan Sorenson of the University of Pennsylvania speak on the main stage of the march rally in Washington, D.C. APA will once again distribute signs and stickers at a specified meeting place where psychologists can gather to march together. This year, leading up to the march, APA has taken a more active role collaborating with the March for Science to highlight the lack of and need for federally funded gun violence research. On March 2, the two organizations released a jointly-drafted letter to Congress, urging policy makers to approve the funding and support needed for gun violence prevention research and to employ evidence-based policies to counter gun violence. As of publication, the letter has attracted official sign-ons from 60 other organizations.

Accompanying the letter to Congress, a call to action was also released to the public calling on concerned citizens to contact their representatives in Washington to demand greater support for gun violence research.
