Objectives: 

At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to describe common reasons transgender individuals seek psychological services, and the American Psychological Association’s guidelines for working with transgender individuals.
  2. Participants will state common medical concerns transgender individuals face, and identify strategies for working effectively with doctors in coordinated care.
  3. Participants will be able to state common pharmacological issues transgender individuals face, and identify strategies for working effectively with pharmacists in coordinated care.

Program Description:

This expert panel will provide a comprehensive overview of competent care for transgender individuals. Our two psychologists will review basics of transgender identities and the psychological disorder of gender dysphoria, reasons transgender individuals commonly seek psychological services and what forms of psychotherapy may be useful for them, and the American Psychological Association’s guidelines for competent transgender care. Our two doctors will describe common medical concerns transgender individuals confront across the lifespan and related medical interventions. Our pharmacist will describe the effects, timeline, and some concerns of pharmacologic agents used in gender dysphoria, and the unique role a pharmacist can play in the coordinated care team. All presenters will describe how psychologists can best facilitate coordinated care for transgender individuals at different ages and points of transition.


About the Presenters:

Presenters: Dr. Laura Asbell, Ph.D., Dr. Sasha Carey, M.D., Dr. Debra Gore, M.D., Dr. Cheyenne Newsome, Pharm.D., and Dr. Darrelle Volwiler, Ph.D.

Dr. Asbell is a clinical psychologist in independent practice in Post Falls, Idaho and her practice includes transgender clients. Dr. Carey is a doctor at Rockwood who is board certified in pediatrics and adolescent medicine. Dr. Gore is a doctor at Group Health who is board certified in family medicine. Dr. Newsome is a clinical assistant professor at Washington State University in Pharmaceuticals and a pharmacist at the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center. Dr. Volwiler is a clinical psychologist also at the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center.

Cancellation policies 

  • During early bird registration period 100% refund of registration

  • During regular registration period a $50 cancellation fee will be assessed for full day pricing, $25 cancellation fee for half day pricing

  • During late registration period no fees will be refunded
